1. The Theory Test. Once you have your provisional licence, you can apply to take your theory test. The theory test is based upon the contents of the Highway Code and consists of 50 multiple choice questions, of which you need to correctly answer 43 or more. The questions are selected randomly from a bank of 1000 questions. You need obtain a copy of the Highway Code and study it. After the theory questions, you will then move onto the hazard perception section. In this section you need to identify the hazards on the 14 different 1 minute clips by clicking the mouse. There is a maximum of 5 points available per clip and a maximum possible score of 75. To pass you need to achieve 44 or more. To book your theory test, or for more information on the test, click here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Motoringtransactions/DG_066356 If you need help with the theory test then I am more than happy to help in your normal lesson.
2. The Practical Driving Test. After you have passed your theory and your driving is up to the required standard (I will let you know when this is), you can then take your practical test. The practical test lasts for 40 minutes and will consist of driving in different situations and includes 2 reversing manoeuvres plus 1 in 3 tests include the emergency stop. Here you will be able to demonstrate all you have learnt to the examiner. To Pass - You need to have made 15 or less driver faults and have no serious or dangerous faults. For more details on the practical driving test, and to book your test, click here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Motoringtransactions/DG_066356 The examiner will ask you 2 'show me, tell me' questions before the test starts. There's more information on these questions, on the 'show me, tell me' page on the left.
How many lessons will I need? So how many lessons will you need to be ready to pass your test? Everyone learns at different rates so there is no ‘one fits all’ rule for how many lessons pupils need. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) say that the average pupil takes 45 hours of professional tuition and a further 22 hours of private practice to pass their test.
